Today's top story is about a familiar name in nfl football. A legend and regular contributor to the world of nfl sports, Dan Marino. Dan, a qb for the dolphin football team, played from 1983-1999 and gave his fans many thrills along the way!! Mr. Marino, also appeared in Ace Ventura/ Pet detective you may remember, starring with Jim Carey in 92-93. Dan was star-quality on the grid iron as well as on the set and even now , relevant as ever with analysis and communication skills that rival the experts in the business of sports broadcasting! Did i mention, i'm a fan of dan marino. His bio reads with the legends as a man who has given charitably to hospitals in florida and Dan Marino has his own "foundation" for autism. His son , Michael having autism. has been benefitting from a foundation that Dan and his wife Claire have started since 1992. Children with autism face stigma and discrimination in education and it is good to see that the Marino's are making a difference for all children affected by this serious condition. There are highly functioning austistic children and all ranges of severity, but i'm sure with the dedication of the marino's and others like them , these children will now have opportunity to grow, develop, use their skills and become independent members of society. Doug Flutie, another qb and many other famous and non-famous people have children with "autism". Autism is growing and the latest stats should raise awareness and concern. Autism is associated with mental retardation and illness though there is no "scientific" proof of autsim there are a number of speculations about the "disease" that affects processing and brain function. These children , historically, suffered the worst discrimination and even "abuse and neglect" in programs that did not provide the basics of humane care and support. While the learning curve on this population of children, seems to be still "clinical" and not one of "inclusion", I am so impressed that the Marino's are taking up the cause for the benefit of all children who are facing these learning and life challenges. we reference a link to Dan Marino today, not about his foundation but about his personal loss in a stock company that is losing money tied to james cameron's "titanic" . Even the celebs are not immune to the volatility of the stock market today and why we see so many extreme highs and lows. So on the high note..
